The Just Food Initiative

Just Food – The Hijra House Just Food Initiative (JFI) aims to promote access, education, production, consumption, commerce, …and sharing of locally-sourced, healthy, and nutritious foods.

Specifically, JFI organizes, prioritizes, and facilitates community – advocating cooperative economics, worker-owned cooperatives, and land trusts as valuable tools in advancing a more inclusive, healthy, and just, local food system for Mississippians. In addition to local community gardens and family farms, Hijra House’s JFI collaborates with the Mississippi Food Policy Council to organize food system practitioners (Fellows) and prioritize state policies that lead to more just Food Systems.

As a modern means of livelihood, living wages, and cooperation by and for all Coastal residents, JFI also supports Off-Bottom Oyster Aquaculture (OBOA) at Coastal Mississippi’s Deer Island Commercial Aquaculture Park .
